Mike Austin
My Mike Austin Story
I met Mike Austin in January 2005 for the first time. Jimmy Mick of Tournament Players who I was taking Golf lessons from had been a student of Mike's for 20 years. Jimmy said we need to see Mike he is at his house in Woodland Hills. We arrived and were greeted my his lovely wife, Tanya who immediately offered us food and drink---later i would learn what an angel saint she was. Mike was in a hospital bed in the living room. Mike had been bed bound since the previous year when he fell and broke his right hip and had it replaced during surgery. Mike was friendly and happy to see us and immediately started telling us stories from his pilot days during WWII and times he played Golf with Bobby Jones and taught Howard Hughes.
I learned that Mike had been paralysed by a stroke on his right side since he was 79 he was now going to be 95 years young. After the stroke he had taught himself to speak again and then got out of bed and started teaching again at Studio City every day. He did not have use of his right arm or leg but continued to teach to a full book daily using only his left arm to swing the golf club for demonstrating the swing. Mike drove himself there every day in is favorite Cadillac! During those years he had out played anyone who challenged him to a game on the 9 hole course there using only his left arm even the other teaching pros.
After a couple of hours of stories we were leaving when Mike said to us come back anytime and visit with him and Tanya agreed. I felt compelled to come back the next day which changed my direction in Golf forever.
When I arrived after calling Tanya first I was greeted my Mike and Tanya---offered coffee and Danish. Mike was in great discomfort and pain from being in bed so long he was not having a good day. He had developed bed sores that he kept digging at which made them even more irratated. It was here I started treating with my THERALASER to take the pain away and help to heal the sores. Mike immediately felt better and was relieved and calm. Over the next few weeks of treating Mike with the THERALASER his bed sore condition was up and down---my schedule was to visit for a few hours with him Tuesday through Friday--I would be in Ventura Friday night through Monday night---then back to see Mike on Tuesday. During this time I met Thomas Dang and Walter "Smiley" Jones. When I told Smiley what had been going on with Mike and the bed sores Smiley sent be a special high tech bed pad for Mike which equalized Mike's body over the length of the bed to make him more comfortable and help prevent the bed sores. Tanya and I now had the bed sore problem under control.
During the first week of using the THERALASER on Mike's back and various acupuncture points I noticed his right hand fingers moving. I mentioned that to Mike and he said they had not moved in 14 years since the stroke. So as I treated him every day we both started noticing the fingers movement. I had him try to wrap his fingers around my index finger---he did and with it the biggest grin came across Mike's face. Then as he held my index finger I used the THERALASER and had him try and move his hand---at first small movements until we were having a little arm wrestling match. Next I had him open and close his hand and raise it slightly---before long he was actually waving his hand like hello or bye-bye laughing and grinning all the time. Tanya was the first he tired this on and was amazed at our results. Now when anyone came to visit Mike would raise his hand and wave to them---grinning all the time. Now on every visit I would arm wrestle with Mike's right hand to build up the lost muscle control. During that year we got some movement and control from his right leg and toes and even more movent and control from his right hand and arm.
While I visited with and treated Mike with the THERALASER we watched his Golf training videos some which have never been released and went over all the details of the Mike Austin swing and how to teach it. We watched Mike Dunaway training videos and other tapes that the two Mikes made together over 25 years. Mike told me that he considered Mike Dunaway the Son he never had and one had one of the best Golf swings. Another Mike Austin student was Betsy Cullen he was very proud of her teaching success in Texas.
During my learning of the Mike Austin Golf swing Mike always told me it was my job to get the club head to do what was in my head. Mike said he uses a swinging motion like a pendulum using the body in the most effective way to strike the ball and send it the farthest with the least amount of energy expended (effortless motion for maximum distance) and let centrifugal force do its job. That is why Mike's swing looks effortless and smooth from the videos when he was 16 years old through until he was 79 years old.
